Choose the right Designer page type and understand the canvas, shape, device, timeline, hosted workspace, export intent, and special controls each type enables.
Where: Designer → Add page, or Dashboard → Let flowmo direct → choose a type.
Key ideas
- Type defines the editing environment: A page type is not merely a label. It decides whether the page reflows or uses an exact artboard, whether the timeline is primary, whether a device or shape control appears, and whether Designer renders a canvas or a native hosted workspace.
- Shape is separate from type: Video, Ad, and Media can use Landscape 16:9 (1920×1080), Portrait 9:16 Reel (1080×1920), Square 1:1 (1080×1080), or Portrait 4:5 (1080×1350). A deck is fixed 16:9, a logo is fixed square, and responsive pages use device widths instead.
- One project may mix types: The type belongs to each page, not the whole project. A single shared Designer document can contain a landing page, deck, ad campaign, document, dashboard, Media workspace, and Design system while preserving stable page identity and page-specific undo.
- Legacy kinds are load-only: Website clone maps to Landing page & website, Prototype maps to Wireframe & mockup, and Live artifact maps to Live dashboard. Image, Audio, and WebGL legacy pages can still load, but none of the six legacy ids appears in the current page picker.
Steps
- Open Add page and choose the deliverable, not the visual size alone. Start with Video for an edited clip, Media for generating assets, Ad for a campaign master and placements, and Page for a responsive site.
- For Landing page, Document, Wireframe, Email, or Live dashboard, choose the relevant Desktop/Tablet/Mobile view where offered and test reflow. The active device is a view of one document, not a separate page.
- For Video, Ad, or Media, choose one of the four shape presets. Changing shape changes the exact composition target, so review crop, type scale, and safe areas after the switch.
- For Slide deck, Video, or Animation & motion, use the time-based controls and timeline. A Deck stays at 1920×1080; it does not expose the general shape picker.
- For Logo, use the fixed 1024×1024 artboard and Logo Studio/version controls. Do not use an Ad or Media page as a substitute when you need a reusable master mark.
- For Media or Design system, work in the native full-page workspace. These pages intentionally replace the iframe canvas and do not expose device, Fields, or timeline controls.
- Use the page menu to rename, duplicate, reorder, remove, refresh, save to the page library, or open a library page. Type changes are not content conversion, so create a new page when the deliverable model is materially different.
- Before export or sharing, inspect the page in its real target: responsive widths for reflow pages, the exact artboard for fixed work, timeline playback for time-based work, and the relevant hosted surface for resources.
Responsive and structured pages
- Landing page & website — responsive/reflow document; opens at Desktop; suited to sites and publishable pages.
- Document & research — responsive long-form document; opens at Desktop with a readable article-width scaffold.
- Wireframe & mockup — responsive structural/prototype canvas; opens at Desktop and prioritizes hierarchy and flow before finish.
- HTML email — responsive email-safe document; opens at Mobile and starts from table-compatible markup for Gmail/Outlook constraints.
- Live dashboard — responsive data-facing interface; opens at Desktop and is intended for readable API or sheet-driven views.
Fixed and time-based pages
- Reel & video edit — fixed 1920×1080 by default, time-based, supports all four shape presets, and is for cutting/timing/exporting finished video.
- Ad — fixed 1080×1080 by default, not time-based, supports all four shape presets, and opens the campaign pipeline for master, layers, sizes, and variations.
- Slide deck — fixed 1920×1080, time-based, and optimized for slide pages, presentation playback, PPT import, and deck export.
- Animation & motion — fixed 1920×1080 and time-based; use the timeline and motion spec when animation itself is the deliverable.
- Logo — fixed 1024×1024, not time-based, and adds Logo Studio, versions, master selection, SVG, and PNG output.
Hosted resource pages
- Media — native gallery/stage/editor for image, video, music, voice, and sound generation; supports the four shape presets as generation intent.
- Design system — native examples/components/foundations/parameters workspace with eighteen sections plus save, apply, and CSS export.
- Hosted pages are still real pages with a title, kind, document identity, tab, and assistant context; only the renderer changes.
Shape and default matrix
- Landscape 16:9 — 1920×1080; default for Video and Media.
- Portrait 9:16 (Reel) — 1080×1920.
- Square 1:1 — 1080×1080; default for Ad.
- Portrait 4:5 — 1080×1350.
- Deck stays 1920×1080 and Logo stays 1024×1024 even though those dimensions resemble shape presets.
- Premium markers currently apply to Reel & video edit, Animation & motion, and Document & research; the marker communicates plan/cost and does not remove the type from the picker.
Tips
- Use Media to make ingredients and a compositional page type to assemble the deliverable.
- Use separate typed pages for genuinely different outputs; duplicate only when the layout and content model should remain related.
- For ads, keep one approved master and let the campaign surface create placement pages instead of manually changing the master repeatedly.
Limitations and important notes
- Changing the page type does not translate existing content into the new type’s ideal structure.
- A responsive device switch does not create three independent documents, and a shape switch does not guarantee an already-built composition will recompose perfectly.
- Legacy types remain readable for compatibility but cannot be selected for new pages.
- Media and Design system pages have no ordinary canvas selection, device strip, Fields strip, or timeline.
Troubleshooting
I chose Media but cannot select text on a canvas.
Media is a hosted asset workspace. Insert the chosen result into a Landing page, Ad, Deck, Video, or other compositional page to edit it in context.
The page has no shape selector.
Only Video, Ad, and Media expose the four-shape axis. Deck and Logo are fixed; responsive types use device widths.
A legacy project shows a type I cannot add.
It is a load-only compatibility type. Create the listed current successor—Page, Wireframe, or Live dashboard—when one exists.
