Reduce oversized 3D scene assets in the Video Editor by resizing/re-encoding textures and optionally simplifying geometry, then review the before/after size and undo if quality suffers.
Where: Native Video Editor → select a scene/model → Scene Model Optimizer, or AI assistant → optimize_compositor_scene_models.
Key ideas
- Optimization is local and reversible: The optimizer processes scene models in the browser and the operation can be undone from project history.
- Texture and geometry changes are distinct: Texture resizing/re-encoding lowers image memory and file size; optional geometry decimation reduces mesh complexity. Choose based on the bottleneck.
- Already optimized models can be skipped: The operation reports before/after size and avoids repeating work on models it recognizes as already optimized.
Steps
- Use this when a scene preview is black/slow, model import is unusually large, or rendering is heavy; first save a recovery point if the project is important.
- Open Scene Model Optimizer on the intended scene models and review the available texture and geometry options.
- Resize/re-encode large textures when memory or image payload is the issue. Enable geometry decimation only when mesh complexity is also a problem.
- Run the optimization and compare its before/after size report, scene load, silhouette, and texture detail.
- Undo if the visual result is too degraded, then use gentler settings or optimize only the heavy model.
AI tool
- optimize_compositor_scene_models is a free in-browser optimization tool; it does not make a model-generation request.
- It can resize/re-encode textures and optionally decimate geometry, reports size changes, and skips already optimized models.
- This applies to native Video Editor scene models and is separate from the Flowgen 3D Optimize node/editor workflow.
Choose an optimization path
- Start with texture resizing/re-encoding when download size, GPU memory, or texture upload dominates.
- Use geometry decimation only when polygon count is the bottleneck; compare the silhouette and fine details after the operation.
- Treat the before/after size report as a diagnostic, not a visual-quality score. Preview the actual shot and undo if the result is too soft or faceted.
Tips
- Optimize the heaviest model first and validate at the final viewing scale; avoid decimation when fine geometry is the point of the shot.
Limitations and important notes
- Lower texture resolution or polygon count can reduce visible quality.
- Model-specific requirements may limit which asset parts can be optimized.
