Connect a video, choose its first frame, last frame, or a scrubbed frame, set an offset and frame rate, then save and route the captured still as an image.
Where: Flowgen → Add → Video tools → Extract Frame; node card or properties sidebar.
Before you start
- Connect a Video node or other video-producing output to video_in.
Key ideas
- One video becomes one still image: The node reads a video on video_in and emits the captured frame on image_out; it does not change the source clip.
- Choose First, Last, or Picked: First and Last capture relative to a clip boundary; Picked uses a frame chosen with the scrub player. Offset applies only to First/Last.
- Offset has a unit and a frame rate: Use an integer frame offset or a seconds offset from the selected boundary. Frame rate is detected from the clip by default and may be overridden when needed.
- Extract Frame card: FrameExtractNode uses the generic shared-card path. Extract the first, last, or an exact frame/offset from a connected video.
- Properties sidebar: FrameExtractPanel.tsx
- Opened surfaces: Image lightbox
Steps
- Add Extract Frame and connect the source video to video_in.
- Open the node card or select it to open the properties sidebar. The card contains compact capture controls; the sidebar exposes the scrubber and detailed frame-rate settings.
- Choose First to capture near the start, Last to capture relative to the end, or Picked to capture a specific frame from the scrub player.
- For First/Last, enter an offset and choose Frames or Seconds. Positive First offsets move forward from the beginning; Last offsets step back from the end.
- For Picked, scrub or step the source player to the exact frame and choose Use this frame. Offset controls are disabled in Picked mode.
- Check the displayed frame rate. Automatic detection is the default; select a preset or enter a manual value only when the detected frame rate is wrong or the source needs an explicit override.
- Click Extract Frame. Wait for the captured frame preview and timestamp; use Download to save the image outside the flow when needed.
- Connect image_out to an image edit/generation reference, a Designer/website asset input, or another image-consuming node according to the still’s intended role.
Card and sidebar controls
- Video preview/scrubber when a source clip is connected.
- Capture from: First, Last, Picked.
- Offset amount plus Frames/Seconds for First/Last.
- Frame rate presets plus a custom numeric value, with automatic detection and Auto-detect.
- Extract Frame action, captured still preview, captured-at timestamp, and Download.
Where this node fits
- Use it to create a stable visual reference from a specific moment in a clip.
- For continuity, capture a clean boundary still and connect it to the next video generation or edit stage.
- Video Analysis describes/transcribes footage; Extract Frame captures an image. Neither edits the source clip.
- A later generation/edit node must consume image_out for the still to influence a result.
Extract Frame controls and presets
- Add path: Flowgen → Add → Video & Motion → Extract Frame.
- Card: FrameExtractNode.
- Properties: FrameExtractPanel.tsx.
- Controls: First/Last/Picked; frame scrubber; frames/seconds; automatic/manual FPS; captured image preview/download.
- Opened surfaces: Image lightbox.
Tips
- Use Picked when the exact moment matters; a rough “two seconds from the end” offset may land between important action beats.
- Leave frame rate on auto unless you have evidence that the detected rate is wrong.
- Name the extracted still by shot/time or purpose so downstream reference chips remain understandable.
Limitations and important notes
- The output is one image, not a trimmed or modified video.
- Offset has no effect in Picked mode.
- A captured frame alone does not automatically connect to another node or authorize a paid generation.
Troubleshooting
Extract Frame is disabled.
Connect a valid video source to video_in and wait for the source video to become available.
Picked mode has no frame selected.
Open the scrub player, move to the desired moment, and choose Use this frame; then run Extract Frame.
An offset lands on the wrong visual moment.
Confirm whether the mode is First or Last and whether the unit is frames or seconds; use Picked for an exact moment.
