Render a local depth-blurred video, pick static focus from the opening frame, or pass the effect into a downstream composition.
Where: Flowgen -> Add -> Video & Motion -> AI Edit -> Video Depth Fog / Blur
Key ideas
- Run locally or compose downstream: The node can now bake its own source-FPS clip in the browser and preview the result. It also retains its depth-pipeline connection to Video Render; it is no longer a non-running pass-through-only card.
- Static focus: Focus, Sharp range, Blur, and FG blur choose one depth-of-field configuration for the whole clip. Pick focus samples the opening frame and stores the selected distance; it is not subject tracking.
- Fog and aperture: Fog amount/start/end/color add distance haze. Invert accommodates map orientation; Focus map is diagnostic. Blades, rotation, highlights, and threshold shape bokeh.
Steps
- Connect the source clip to video_in and open Depth blur settings.
- Set Focus, Sharp range, Blur, and FG blur, or use Pick focus on the opening frame to choose what stays sharp.
- Adjust fog and aperture controls only as needed; disable Focus map before final delivery.
- Run in the open browser to bake a standalone result, then inspect the clip rather than the source-only preview.
- For a compositor workflow, connect the optional depth-map input or upstream depth chain and send video_out to Video Render.
- Check several frames across the entire clip, especially when the subject changes distance.
Complete property reference
- opParams: focus, range, radius, nearBlur, fogAmount, fogStart, fogEnd, fogColor, invertDepth, showFocusMap, blades, rotation, highlights, threshold.
- video_in is the source; depth_in is an optional compositor depth connection; video_out carries the result/pipeline.
- The local standalone executor currently builds its effect from the source video and settings. Do not assume an independently connected depth clip is consumed by that local path; use and verify the Video Render depth-input workflow when that distinction matters.
Tips
- Lower FG blur toward 0 for a conventional portrait treatment that mainly softens the background.
- Use a wider Sharp range when the subject moves slightly toward or away from camera.
- Set Focus map temporarily to understand the falloff, then turn it off.
- Use a short representative test range before rendering a long clip.
Limitations and important notes
- All parameters are static; no depth keyframes or automatic focus tracking.
- Local baking requires a browser and can take substantial time on long clips.
- Depth estimation can flicker at cuts and fine/transparent edges.
Troubleshooting
Focus drifts away from a moving subject.
The selected focus distance is static. Choose a wider sharp range or split the shot and use settings appropriate to each segment.
FAQ
Do I need Video Depth Map first?
No. Without one, Video Render estimates depth internally. Add the map when you need explicit map orientation, inspection, or branching.
Can I animate focus?
Not on this node yet. Split the footage or use separate shot treatments when focus must change.
